Posted by devo on August 31, 2009

After a fascinating New South Wales SVL season, it boils down to finals time next Sunday 6/9/09

  • The inevitable Honours clash will be between the major foes – Sydney North and Sydney Uni in the Women
  • The men’s Honours final will showcase the 2 outstanding teams of the season – UTS and Westside

See Volleyball NSW for all the finals draws and times. Entry is free.

In the ACT there is one round to go before finals.

  • In the Men’s Panthers are out in front ahead of Belconnen and UC Devils
  • In the women’s Panthers Red are just edging out ANU and Panthers Black

In Queensland Premier League they have played the first round of finals (sorry no results – anyone?)

  • In the women’s 3 teams tied! Easts (10-4) on top, followed by BVC1 (10-4), Redlands (10-4) and UQ (9-5)

In South Australia finals begin on the 5/9/09. They went one better than the Qld women.

  • In the men’s comp Mt Lofty, Norwood, South and USC Lions all finished on 10-6
  • In the women’s comp Mt Lofty, USC Lions, South and Australs will fight out the finals

State League

Posted by devo on August 30, 2009

Semi-finals in State League were held here in Victoria yesterday.

In the men’s, Heidelberg cruised to a 3-0 win over Falcons and a spot in the grand final. Falcons will now play Monash University who defeated Melbourne Uni Renegades in 5 sets in the other semi.

In the women’s, Monash University def Yarra Ranges in 3 sets to go straight to the grand final. Falcons def Heidelberg in 4 sets to claim a preliminary final spot.

I would love to hear from the other states how their leagues are going. Hit the comments tag at the bottom of this post to give us an update.

Cedars not in NSW State League

Posted by devo on May 15, 2009

Volleyball NSW SVL 2009

  • Commences this Sunday 17th May 2009
  • Venue Sydney Olympic Park Sports Halls
  • Cnr Grand Parade and Olympic Bvde
  • First games 9.00 am

Who will be the champions this year? – Will anyone be able to dethrone the Honours womens favourites Sydney Uni?

Men’s Honours is wide open with long time champs Sydney Cedars sadly unable to field a team this year. Will it be UNSW or Westside?

The lower divisions look to be up for grabs as well – keep your eye on the SVL website for all the latest.

NSW State League

Posted by devo on September 15, 2008

The New South Wales State League finals were played at the weekend.

Honours Men
The Bronze game saw an exciting five setter between UTS and USYD. UTS continued their good form from last week and came out firing to take the first set 25 to 21. USYD fought back to win the second but could not continue their run and lost the third. That was followed by a close fourth set which USYD managed to take out 26-24. UTS went hard in the fifth and led 8-0 before USYD clawed their way back, however the UTS led was too much for USYD and UTS took out the set giving them the Bronze for 2008. UTS def USYD, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-13.

In the Gold playoff, UNSW had nothing to lose against 11 time champions, Cedars. In what was a surprising start to the match, UNSW took out the first 25 to 22. However Cedars proved too strong taking the next two sets 25-19 and 25-18. UNSW were not to be discounted and tried their best to level the match, going point for point in much of the fourth set, however Cedars managed to get a few points ahead and UNSW could not come back, Cedars taking out the last set 25-23. Gold to Cedars! Cedars def UNSW, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23.

Honours Women
Third place was decided last week, when UTS lost to SNV in the preliminary final. This week, SNV had to face USYD in the gold final, USYD were coming back after the week off. The first set was close, with the teams siding out most of the way through, keeping the scores level. However, USYD proved too strong in the end and they took out the set 25-23. They continued that run taking the second 25-18. But SNV would not go down without a fight and they managed to take the third 25-23. SNV managed to continue that form and led for most of the fourth set, however USYD pulled through in the end, taking the fourth set and the match 25 to 22. Gold to USYD! USYD def SNV, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22.

Divison One Men
Bronze: USYD def Dragons 1 25-21, 25-16, 25-27, 25-21.
Gold: UTS def Eagles, 26-24, 17-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-10.

Divison One Women
Bronze: BHV H def Kaiata, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14, 24-26, 15-6.
Gold: Manly def USYD B, 26-24, 25-20, 25-19.

Junior Boys

Bronze: USYD def Dragons, 25-16, 25-21, 25-15.
Gold: Vostok def BHV, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 15-7.

Junior Girls
Bronze: BHV def USYD, 25-18, 25-10, 25-15.
Gold: SNV def UTS 2 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.

Club Championship
It was a close tussle between UTS and USYD this year, with both clubs having teams in almost all the division’s finals. USYD had an edge having entered more teams, however that would mean nothing if the teams did not go on to win. In the end the success of those teams resulted in USYD taking out the championship by a single point! Well done to both clubs for a well fought competition! Congratulations to USYD! more@ VolleyballNSW
