High Performance Manager on Slovak result

Posted by devo on May 20, 2008

Following series wins against Greece and Slovakia on the way to the Olympic qualifying event in Japan, Australian High Performance Manager Adam Sachs said National Head Coach Russell Borgeaud was impressed with the team’s depth and the emergence of the younger brigade.

“The young ‘up-and-comers’ are playing so well that several of our key senior players are getting some bench time,” said Sachs. “We will be one of the youngest teams in Japan and certainly one of the only teams that plays nearly all 12 players at some stage during most games.” more @ Hanson Sport Media

Aussie players on Slovakia

Aussie team members Luke Campbell and Nathan Roberts have updated their blogs with reports from Slovakia.

Luke Campbell’s blog: This series win marks two consecutive series wins in Europe which is no doubt a first ever by an Australian Men’s Team.

Nathan Robert’s blog: My highlight of the match was when we made a few blocking subs and ended up having Fergo (205-206) Dan (209-210) and Zane (209-210) all in front row at the same time to form ‘THE WALL’.

Lebedew from courtside

Posted by devo on May 20, 2008

Aussie Mark Lebedew was courtside for the first match Australia versus Slovakia. He reports:

Both teams started sluggishly with a lot of unforced errors, especially in serve.  Australia lacked precision in all aspects and were soon 0-2.  Both teams struggled on serve throughout the match, with many players resorting to float serves in a bit of an 80’s flashback.  But the rhythm of the Australians improved after the second set with the introduction of Paul Carroll and Brett Alderman.  Carroll in particular dominated at the net and finished with 20 points.  In the fifth set, Australia came back from an early deficit to win on their 4th match point.

I even took a couple of photos.

AIS win in Slovakia

Posted by devo on January 23, 2008

Thanks to Phongy’s AVF email service, we can report that the AIS defeated Slovakia Juniors 3:2 (25-17, 20-25, 19-25, 28-26, 15-13)

AIS Starting Line-up (and points scored): Bell (1)(QLD), White (C)(15)(QLD), Passier (11)(QLD), Edgar (11)(QLD), Boyschau (5)(QLD), Zingel (2)(NSW), Libero – Hughes (VIC)
Substitutes: Hingston (2)(TAS), Hill (1)(QLD), Peacock (0)(SA), Foster (7)(QLD), Simmonds (DNP)(WA)

The Australian Institute of Sport Men’s Volleyball Team continued their 2008 European Tour in Slovakia, this evening, with a five-set match against the Slovakian National Junior Team. Both teams comprise athletes from the 89-90 age group, with each team fielding a small number of 91-92 born players. Slovakia produces strong junior teams, with their last junior team missing the final twelve of Junior World Championships by just one position. In this match, the AIS Team started brilliantly, but a probable lapse in concentration allowed Slovakia back into the contest and they took the next two sets. The AIS fought back and eventually won the match in yet another five set battle, their sixth for the tour.

The full match report is on the Volleyball Australia site.
