Rachel justs keeps keeping on

Posted by devo on October 3, 2009

Nearly joining the 30-kill club for the second time in her career, senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) hit a season-high 29 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team (Aussie Mark Barnard – Associate Head Coach) to a five-set upset (25-21, 21-25, 10-25, 25-22, 16-14) of No. 7 Oregon (Aussie Rhiannon Tooker) in front of a record crowd of 3,576 more@OSUBeavers

No Beaver had ever beaten the Ducks, who had won 18 of the 20 sets in their six-match wining streak in the rivalry.

“It means so much,” Rourke said. “It’s one of the games you do want to win. You understand it all, you understand it all,” she added, alluding to the importance of the rivalry. … Rourke carried the Beavers at crunch time, as she hit 7 of 9 (.780) in the fifth set en route to a match-high 29 kills. Her penultimate spike tied the final set 13-13; the last of her 34 points gave the Beavers a 15-14 advantage …

“We found a way to win in the fifth set, and particularly it was a gut-check at the net, touching those last few balls, digging a few balls in the backcourt, and Rachel  terminating,” said OSU coach Terry Liskevych, still quaking with excitement 30 minutes after the match. “Rachel was unbelievable. We didn’t pass very well so we couldn’t run our middle, but Rachel was unstoppable every time she hit the ball and that was great to see. We fed her, and she kept hitting. more@democrat herald

Aussie vs Aussie in Civil War

Posted by devo on September 30, 2009

Correspondent Ross Sullivan reports that it is a big week in the PAC-10 at Oregon this week. The Beavers play the Ducks, which is known as the ‘civil war’, on Friday the 2nd Oct at 7.00pm. It will be played at Corvallis so Oregon State are expecting a big crowd. It will see an Australian flavour as Rhiannon Tooker plays with the Ducks and Rachel Rourke with the Beavers. It is also Rachel’s birthday (21st) on the 1st Oct. You can watch the game via their website, with a small fee to pay, I think. Oregon State Uni ~ University of Oregon

Ross is spending the season with Oregon State working with Terry Liskevych and Mark Barnard. Earlier, he  spent 3 weeks working with Towson University near Baltimore. This is the same conference where Sam Simmons and Bec Walter play. Ross says he is, “Enjoying my ‘US Volleyball’ experience.”

Rourke thinks beach the answer

Posted by devo on September 9, 2009

Rachel Rourke wanted to be more than The Thunder from Down Under.

The personable outside hitter from Queensland, Australia, aspired to be a complete player, something more than a hitting specialist who hit the bench when it was time for her to rotate into the back row. Mission accomplished. Four years of hard work have transformed her from a one-trick pony into a versatile player who generally plays the entire match.

Rachel’s considered the possibility of playing in the Olympics, but the Australians are in the very difficult Asian qualifying group, with Japan, China and Korea, and will have a hard time advancing to the 2012 London Summer Games. (Ex-Beaver Selena Scoble played for Australia in 2000, but that team automatically qualified because the Olympics were in Sydney.)

So a better bet may be 2016, in a different medium. “The Australian national team usually doesn’t qualify for the Olympics. But there’s always a first,” she said. “(Her best shot) is probably in 2016, playing beach volleyball. I’ll give it a couple more years indoors, then go out to the sand.” full article @ Brooks Hatch

Posted by devo on January 28, 2009

Few NCAA volleyball stars shine brighter than Oregon State junior outside hitter Rachel Rourke, who was recently named to the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Pacific Region Team.

Rourke delighted teammates, fans and the AVCA, as she was a consistent scorer on the courts this year. Averaging 4.44 kills per set throughout the season (4.84 Pac-10), she earned her spot on the All-Pac-10 First Team, and became the first volleyball player in school history to earn honorable mention status. “It’s a great honor,” Rourke said. “But I couldn’t do it without the team, so it’s a great honor for all of us.”

Born in Queensland, Australia, Rourke has considerable international experience, as she has played for the Australian National Team at both youth and high school levels. She eventually found her way to Oregon State University, where she quickly became one of the most honored volleyball athletes of all time. “Coming to OSU was probably one of the better decisions I’ve ever made,” Rourke said. “I love playing volleyball and practicing with the coaches, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” Read the rest of this entry »
