Happy birthday Louise

The Aussies will be playing for a medal this weekend at the US$380,000 Mazury Open as the Australian qualifiers made a name for themselves by denying a Brazilian sweep of the “final four” berths with one of their three Beach Volleyball victories here Friday.

Competing in only their third SWATCH FIVB World Tour together, the 26th-seeded Palmer and Bawden upset third-seeded Shelda Bede and Ana Paula Connelly 18-21, 21-19 and 15-12 in 53 minutes in the next-to-last elimination round at the Mazury Open to leave only three Brazilian teams in the competition.  Shelda and Ana Paula were the Mazury Open defending champions. It added an extra celebration to Louise’s birthday. more@fivb

Ben on finals and rotations

Posted by devo on April 14, 2009

Here is an update sent to us by Aussie player Ben Hardy KS Jastrzebski Wegiel SABabel translation – on the Polish League and more on the rotation scandal from his game:

12-04-2009 : POLISH SEMI-FINALS:

We played the first 2 games away in the best of 5 series. Game 1 was not our best performance it has to be said. We lost 3.0 and really struggled to get our game going. What made it worse is that Belchatow did not play their best game either. They, however, served really well and this was the strongest part of their game. We had a couple of leads during the 2nd and 3rd set but good serving from Belchatow was the key for them coming back and taking the match.

Game 2 was a different story. The level of this game was higher than the first and it provided one of the most controvertial decisions of the year. The rotation scandal…I am not 100% up to date with the rules however the decisions didn’t make sense to me. I may be biased as I play for Jestrzebie, but I still fail to see how they came to this conclusion. We were losing the match 2.1 and leading the 4th set 10.9 when the Belchatow bench/stats man? noticed that a player was on the court and not on the starting rotation sheet. They subsequently told the coach who told the scorers bench. They went on to try to see if we were in the wrong rotation with the correct server in position 1. The coach had to go back and tell them no, there is the wrong player on the court not the rotation itself. The refs had no idea!! Well, being a middle blocker the player in question started the match off the court, so they decided while he was on the bench being substituted for the libero we could keep those points, but when he came on and did a full rotation those points we could not keep; so they took 5 away. No players knew anything about a wrong player being on the court and before this point it was game on as usual. As far as I am aware (I am not a Referee) the wrong rotation could be established from the start of the set because 7 players are considered on the court even if one of them is sitting on the bench. i.e middle or libero. So should we have gone back to 0? In any case if we called a timeout and put the right person on court what would they do then? Play-on?

This case has been protested as it’s a big game and there are some descrepensies in the protocol that the referee’s took that I will not go into. However, being Easter and everyone is on holidays (except for us),the case may take some time to come through. We play the next game on Thursday so we shall see what happens. It must be said that the first mistake was done by us in putting the wrong rotation sheet to the refs. Been done plenty of times before!!! But all they have to do is look at it. Why 5 points?? Seriously…..

Beach success

Another great result for our Aussie beach guys in Poland.

Fifth-seeded Andrew Schacht and Joshua Slack scored their win in 60 minutes over Harley and Salgado to share the $14,000 third-place prize.  It was the Australians’ first international medal since claiming the bronze medal at the 2007 SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Switzerland last July.

The 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour comprises 20 men’s events and 19 women’s events featuring the world’s best Beach Volleyball players competing for a record $8.325 million in Prize Money. And in this Olympic year, players are also trying to score one of the 24 tickets to Beijing.

The Russian Rockets led 2-0 after two sets, before the Poles bounced back with an outstanding fighting spirit. Mark is blogging in Poland

Posted by devo on December 17, 2007

Ex Aussie Mark Lebedew (you are reading that correctly – see here) has updated his blog with news from KS Jastrzebski Wegiel SA – (Babel translation)  in Poland.

Today we played against Bydgoszcz. For those keeping track, that is the first match of the second round. In the first round we barely scraped through with a 3-2 win. This time we were much better prepared (notwithstanding the travel from Holland) and won easily. It was our best win of the season and also our best performance. read more
