Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year winner

Posted by devo on December 6, 2009

Elson Volleyaward bannerdevo’s volleyball is proud to announce that the inaugural winner of the Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year award is Paul Freckleton.

The award was announced at the Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup opening ceremony this evening. Paul received:  A trophy from devo’s, a $250 Elson Volley voucher from Elson Volley, and a European club presentation pack from Mark Lebedew.

Paul is presented with his trophy by Volleyball Australia's president Chris Schacht

Paul comes from Sunraysia Volleyball (Mildura), and was nominated by Brad Mason.

  • Sunraysia Academy of Sport (SAS) Boys Squad Coach, 2005 – 2009
  • Walkers Volleyball Club head Coach and President for many years
  • Victoria Gold Under 17 Coach 2009
  • Sunraysia Volleyball (SVI) Men’s Coach
  • SVI Volleyball Academy Program Manager and Head Coach for past three years
  • SVI Development Officer
  • SVI Liaison Officer to VVI
  • Winner of Referee Award at Vic Country Champs 2008
  • Sunraysia Indoor Sporting Group chair

Brad’s nomination, in part, reads:

I think that my coach Paul Freckleton should get the award … because not only is he the best volleyball coach I have ever had, but a great bloke to go with it.

Paul aka Freck. My first involvement with Paul was 5 years ago ( … at) the Sunraysia volleyball academy. … After one fun filled training session with Paul he had me in love with volleyball; without Paul saying a word I was coming to the rest of training whether he liked it or not because I enjoyed being at training that much it seemed stupid not to come back. … I have been able to further my skills more then I would have ever thought would be possible … this is all thanks to Paul.

Throughout my time I have witnessed Paul trying to make himself the best coach he can be. Paul attends coaches’ seminars to make sure he is on the front page of everything coaching. He asks for feedback and get tips from coaches from the highest level possible …

… Paul has been taking me to and from trainings for the whole time and anyone else that needs a lift he has no problem with taking them. To be honest I would not be the player I am today and the academy would not run without this one man. I have never known someone to be so committed to the kids that he is coaching and getting the best out of us.

I’m not going to say the Paul is the best coach volleyball has ever seen but he is constantly working his way towards it …

He is very deserving of this award.

Lebedew wins without Bawden

Posted by devo on October 14, 2009

Tom Bawden – Mark Lebedew (C) – Volleyball Club FrankenTranslation – Another Aussie theme to a win – this time in Germany. The re-badged Eschenbacher volleys (who took up the licence of the nearby SG Eschenbacher Eltmann) succeeded in the Jako Arena in Bamberg. The newly formed League team on Friday night swept Moerser SC 3:0 (25:11, 25:16, 25:21) out of the hall and landed in the second game of the season their first victory.

It was a great team effort, everyone has done his job,” enthused coach Mark Lebedew after the emphatic victory. … a surprisingly clear home success, although the hosts had to do without their diagonal Tom Bawden. The Australian national team member only returned on Friday.

Because of devo

Posted by devo on September 24, 2009

Alexis Lebedew reports:

I’m running a conference at the moment, Symposium for the International Association of Computer Science in Sporthttp://www.ausport.gov.au/about/events/iacss2009. I was talking to one of the presenters about a great presentation he gave on apportioning the relative contribution to performance of each player in a team sport.

He saw my surname and asked if I was related to Mark Lebedew. I said I was and asked where he knew Mark from. He replied and said that he played volleyball and knew me from Devo’s blog, where he was a regular reader but non-contributer (this is known as a ‘lurker’ in e-terminolgy).

I’m very used to being known because of my surname and my brother and father – but never before because of Devo!

It brought a smile to devo’s face Alexis.

Mein name ist Tom.

Posted by devo on July 29, 2009

Aussie player Tom Bawden has signed with the Mark Lebedew coached Volleyball Club Franken for the 09/10 German Budesliga 1 season according to their club site. The new club “replaces” Eltmann and will play in the UNESCO listed town of Bamberg, possibly one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Well I loved it there. Even the smoked beer!

Pepper

Posted by devo on July 27, 2009

At the recent Mark Lebedew presentation, one of the more animated discussions was on pepper. We all do it. Most trainings begin with a warm up, followed by pepper.

But why do we pepper? And should we? What’s your view?

Eltmann photos

Posted by devo on March 24, 2009

I watched the Eltmann vs Haching match in the German Bundesliga at the weekend. Eltmann, again without several starting players due to injury, were at times competitive with the league leaders, but in the end could not match the consistency of the league leaders and their tall front line.

Again, I enjoyed the atmosphere in the stadium – wall to wall non-stop noise from the fans supporting Eltmann in their last home game for the season.

Aussie Brett Alderman, missed due a strained foot. You can check out some pictures in the left column, that feature Aussie libero Phill DeSalvo, and Eltmann’s Australian coach Mark Lebedew.

Lebedew meets his team

For the players of  SG Eschenbacher Eltmann the change of coach to Mark Lebedew, particularly after the last two victories of Milan Maric,  probably came as a  surprise. Milan has become an institution at Eltmann.

The transition is a “difficult situation” admitted Lebedew openly. “I know Milan from my time in Wuppertal, and this is not pleasant for either of us.”

“That we must make the play offs, is clear,” said Lebedew after the first training.  “The players work well, and that makes it simpler for the future,” said the pleased Australian. Naturally,  he can say nothing concrete for the moment about what he must change. “I will analyze many play videos in the next days, and then I will see what we must work on, skills and tactically.”

The question of what type of trainer Mark would be was answered by Eltmann setter Brett Alderman, who has worked with Lebedew in the Australian national team.  ” He is a friendly person, who goes openly to people and talks with them. On the field, however, he requires hard work and works himself hard. He says, mistakes are not bad, but he expects that the next action is better and the players must take responsibility for their actions. We will hard work, but I look forward to it.” more@Eltmann

UPDATE: tv report – only on IE – Firefox users can download the file at http:/www.sg-eltmann.de/tvbericht.wmv – it’s in German, naturally, but you can play spot the Aussie!

Lebedew to Germany

Posted by devo on January 21, 2009

SG Eschenbacher Eltmann in Germany is changing coaches. The team where Aussies Phill DeSalvo and Brett Alderman play will be coached by Aussie Mark Lebedew. The 41-year-old (born 06.05.67) Australian knows the Bundesliga, not least through his work as a (head) coach at SV Bayer Wuppertal, Germany from 2002 to 2005. Mark has been at the Polish Champions League club KS Jastrzebski Wegiel.

Aussies in Poland results

Posted by devo on January 18, 2009

Aussie Ben Hardy playing for KS Jastrzębski Węgiel in Poland reports that they had a 3-0 win against Kiev Lokomotiv in their first meeting, in the 1/8 finals of the European Challenge Cup.

It was a solid performance winning the first leg against Kiev. The knee is still not the best and now Samica had a finger injury early in the 3rd prompting Igor Yudin‘s entry – he played very solid keeping our momentum and the win. Injuries have taken their toll this year. Lins now recovered from his knee injury; Pecherz has now recovered from his shoulder injury. This year the receivers have had a tough time. With the return to be played, having a 3-0 victory is very important. We need to win 1 set to go to the next round, most likely to play against the Italian team Treviso. more@ Ben Hardy’s blog

You can see a report of the previous Portugese leg of the Challenge Cup at Aussie Coach Mark Leb’s blog, as well as keep up-to-date with the progress of KS Jastrzębski Węgiel‘s season, and enjoy some “interesting” views on volleyball and life in general.
