Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year winner

Posted by devo on December 6, 2009

Elson Volleyaward bannerdevo’s volleyball is proud to announce that the inaugural winner of the Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year award is Paul Freckleton.

The award was announced at the Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup opening ceremony this evening. Paul received:  A trophy from devo’s, a $250 Elson Volley voucher from Elson Volley, and a European club presentation pack from Mark Lebedew.

Paul is presented with his trophy by Volleyball Australia's president Chris Schacht

Paul comes from Sunraysia Volleyball (Mildura), and was nominated by Brad Mason.

  • Sunraysia Academy of Sport (SAS) Boys Squad Coach, 2005 – 2009
  • Walkers Volleyball Club head Coach and President for many years
  • Victoria Gold Under 17 Coach 2009
  • Sunraysia Volleyball (SVI) Men’s Coach
  • SVI Volleyball Academy Program Manager and Head Coach for past three years
  • SVI Development Officer
  • SVI Liaison Officer to VVI
  • Winner of Referee Award at Vic Country Champs 2008
  • Sunraysia Indoor Sporting Group chair

Brad’s nomination, in part, reads:

I think that my coach Paul Freckleton should get the award … because not only is he the best volleyball coach I have ever had, but a great bloke to go with it.

Paul aka Freck. My first involvement with Paul was 5 years ago ( … at) the Sunraysia volleyball academy. … After one fun filled training session with Paul he had me in love with volleyball; without Paul saying a word I was coming to the rest of training whether he liked it or not because I enjoyed being at training that much it seemed stupid not to come back. … I have been able to further my skills more then I would have ever thought would be possible … this is all thanks to Paul.

Throughout my time I have witnessed Paul trying to make himself the best coach he can be. Paul attends coaches’ seminars to make sure he is on the front page of everything coaching. He asks for feedback and get tips from coaches from the highest level possible …

… Paul has been taking me to and from trainings for the whole time and anyone else that needs a lift he has no problem with taking them. To be honest I would not be the player I am today and the academy would not run without this one man. I have never known someone to be so committed to the kids that he is coaching and getting the best out of us.

I’m not going to say the Paul is the best coach volleyball has ever seen but he is constantly working his way towards it …

He is very deserving of this award.

Sorry Mark, but the devo budget does not extend to airfares from Germany!

I would like to thank Eldo and Mark for their support of the award, and also Stuart for his help with judging. Click on photos to enlarge

Volleyball shops

Posted by devo on August 4, 2009

I am not a shopper. I am in and out of the supermarket in world record time. The boys made me buy a mobile phone, so they could find me in the shopping centre. A waste of money – I’ll be in the book shop or the record (CD) shop, the only shops I browse casually. The only other exception to these is a volleyball shop, and the only chance I get to do this is at tournaments.

As a country person, even sports stores are light on. And specialist volleyball gear is never stocked. When I get desperate, I log onto Elson Volley or Volleyball Warehouse for a browse. “Just looking thanks.” New bags, new whistles, new balls …

So I was upset to hear that one of my annual browses is not going to happen at the Victorian Schools’ Cup this next weekend. Apparently the space that was used for the shop is now the tournament office. The ex-tournament office is a retail space for the basketball people. I can’t believe that they can’t find a spot for the shop, especially for the country kids who will not now get that rare chance to be hands on with volleyball gear. To grab a new pair of knee pads before the tournament begins. Thank goodness for the internet!

Volleyball Warehouse tells me that they will be running heaps of promos and giveaways and a free BBQ at their Cheltenham Road warehouse, which will be open Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 9am-6pm and Sun 10am-3pm.  (Factory 8, 171 Cheltenham Rd, Dandenong VIC 3175 ~ Tel: 03-9701 3806)

“We’ve just had a huge shipment of new shoes from Asics and Mizuno arrive. There’s now 23 different volleyball shoes in our range. It’s the best it’s ever looked. Molten are launching the new NCAA indoor balls and we will also have on show the still in development Molten Flista Tec range of indoor balls. These have an all new panel design and textured finish. We’re giving every kid that comes into the shop a Molten/AVW t’shirt absolutely FREE … even if they buy nothing! We’re also going to run a heap of other specials. All the old model shoes are 30-50% off. Joust t’shirts are 30% off. We have a club/state uniform clearance at 50% off. Anyone who spends more than $50 gets a FREE Molten Mini volleyball valued at $20 and every pair of shoes sold will include a free pair of Joust socks.”

Sounds like it’s worth the five minute trip between matches. Me? I think I’ll stay home in Wonnie for the weekend. Might just turn off the mobile and check out Eldo’s and Shane’s sites for old times sake.

Devo has a conflict of interest in this post – I know the office boy!

Parents’ Lament – the sequel

Posted by devo on April 26, 2008

active ankleSome of you will remember my very short trip to this year’s Warrnambool tournament. My eldest did his ankle under the net, three minutes after we arrived. End of tournament. A slower; more leisurely trip home.

I have ventured out again to watch the son and heir play state league for Falcons. I actually got to watch the full match. He lost in a tight 5 setter against Latrobe Valley. As the picture shows, he has learnt a valuable lesson. Yes, even setters can learn! A big thank you to Eldo for providing the equipment.

Talking setters – There is a young 14/15 year old setting in Matt’s team. His name is Sam Brisbane. Talk about deja vu! A little taller than Matt at the same age, but the same build – lean, spindly, quick.  And nice hands. Watch this young boy.
