Not just a blogger our Hugh

Posted by devo on December 12, 2009

Okay, it’s not volleyball, but this does deserve a mention. Regular devo’s blogger Hugh found out on the bus trip home from Schools’ Cup that his animation studio had won the Australian Film Industry award for best short animation. The Cat Piano, which is narrated by Nick Cave, is about a city of singing cats which is preyed upon by a shadowy figure intent on performing a twisted feline symphony.

Well done mate. And if the search I did on the internet is anything to go by, other, greater awards, may be on the way.

UPDATE: It’s now official

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 animated short films will advance in the voting process for the 82nd Academy Awards®. Thirty-seven pictures had originally qualified in the category.

The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production company:

* “The Cat Piano,” Eddie White and Ari Gibson, directors (The People’s Republic of Animation) …

The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting in screenings held in New York and Los Angeles. Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select the five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco in January 2010. more ~ more

Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year winner

Posted by devo on December 6, 2009

Elson Volleyaward bannerdevo’s volleyball is proud to announce that the inaugural winner of the Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year award is Paul Freckleton.

The award was announced at the Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup opening ceremony this evening. Paul received:  A trophy from devo’s, a $250 Elson Volley voucher from Elson Volley, and a European club presentation pack from Mark Lebedew.

Paul is presented with his trophy by Volleyball Australia's president Chris Schacht

Paul comes from Sunraysia Volleyball (Mildura), and was nominated by Brad Mason.

  • Sunraysia Academy of Sport (SAS) Boys Squad Coach, 2005 – 2009
  • Walkers Volleyball Club head Coach and President for many years
  • Victoria Gold Under 17 Coach 2009
  • Sunraysia Volleyball (SVI) Men’s Coach
  • SVI Volleyball Academy Program Manager and Head Coach for past three years
  • SVI Development Officer
  • SVI Liaison Officer to VVI
  • Winner of Referee Award at Vic Country Champs 2008
  • Sunraysia Indoor Sporting Group chair

Brad’s nomination, in part, reads:

I think that my coach Paul Freckleton should get the award … because not only is he the best volleyball coach I have ever had, but a great bloke to go with it.

Paul aka Freck. My first involvement with Paul was 5 years ago ( … at) the Sunraysia volleyball academy. … After one fun filled training session with Paul he had me in love with volleyball; without Paul saying a word I was coming to the rest of training whether he liked it or not because I enjoyed being at training that much it seemed stupid not to come back. … I have been able to further my skills more then I would have ever thought would be possible … this is all thanks to Paul.

Throughout my time I have witnessed Paul trying to make himself the best coach he can be. Paul attends coaches’ seminars to make sure he is on the front page of everything coaching. He asks for feedback and get tips from coaches from the highest level possible …

… Paul has been taking me to and from trainings for the whole time and anyone else that needs a lift he has no problem with taking them. To be honest I would not be the player I am today and the academy would not run without this one man. I have never known someone to be so committed to the kids that he is coaching and getting the best out of us.

I’m not going to say the Paul is the best coach volleyball has ever seen but he is constantly working his way towards it …

He is very deserving of this award.

Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year

Posted by devo on September 28, 2009

devo’s volleyball is proud to present …

award bannerAre you coached by a fantastic coach?

Countless teachers, and club coaches across Australia put in hours of work to create programs that grow our young volleyballers. They are the ones that are at the gym first; they are the last to leave. They drive the bus to tournaments. They organise the accommodation and food. They are there for the first game of the tournament and then go home on the last bus.
These are the people that often start a program from scratch. They are the unpaid heroes of our sport.

They need their moment to shine, and to get the recognition of their peers. We can’t reward every coach out there who deserves it, but we can reward one. Your coach may not have won the most gold medals, but they might have held together a rag tag bunch who just can’t wait for their next volleyball match. They have instilled in you a love of volleyball. Each training you see your skills improve.

Here’s your chance to nominate your coach to be the inaugural Australian Junior Volleyball: Coach of the Year. Click on the coach of the year tab at the top of the page for all the info and the nomination form.

And for the winning coach: A trophy, a $250 Elson Volley voucher, and a European club presentation pack

Because of devo

Posted by devo on September 24, 2009

Alexis Lebedew reports:

I’m running a conference at the moment, Symposium for the International Association of Computer Science in Sporthttp://www.ausport.gov.au/about/events/iacss2009. I was talking to one of the presenters about a great presentation he gave on apportioning the relative contribution to performance of each player in a team sport.

He saw my surname and asked if I was related to Mark Lebedew. I said I was and asked where he knew Mark from. He replied and said that he played volleyball and knew me from Devo’s blog, where he was a regular reader but non-contributer (this is known as a ‘lurker’ in e-terminolgy).

I’m very used to being known because of my surname and my brother and father – but never before because of Devo!

It brought a smile to devo’s face Alexis.

What’s going on at the top of the blog?

Posted by devo on September 23, 2009

There’s a lot of extra tags at the top of the blog!

I am in the process of combining devo’s volleyball coach blog into devo’s volleyball blog. This process may take up to 24 hours (sigh – out of my control). But it will mean that the posts and resources on the coaches’ blog will not be lost.

There has not been enough interest in the coaches’ blog (average of 30 page views a day) to warrant the time needed to maintain it.

I will “clean up” the page excesses tomorrow, or sooner if WordPress are quicker than indicated. Then I will take down the coaches’ page. Coaching issues will continue to be posted in devo’s volleyball.

UPDATE: WordPress were very quick! Done

A timely reminder

Posted by devo on September 4, 2009

Devo says:

Please keep comments on posts “polite”. The vast majority of commentators do this.  Vigorous argument is encouraged. Personal abuse or “Flaming” is not. I will edit or delete these posts. If I miss an inappropriate comment – the post author does get an email copy of each comment – please contact me via the Contact Devo tag at the top of the page.

I am happy for commentators to use pseudonyms – up to 4 by one eager commentator – but please do not “hide” behind the pseudonym to say something that you would not say in person. Please do use a valid email address. I will not disclose it to anyone, but it gives me the opportunity to follow up or clarify an issue with you if the need arises.

If you are commenting on a product or business that you own or represent, or the product or business of your opposition, then I think that it is only fair that you acknowledge your connection to that business or product.

Be fair; be vigorous; be nice.

For those new to blogs, you can add a comment to the bottom of each post by clicking on the leave a comment2 comments tag at the end of each post. You can read comments written by others by clicking the same tag.

Occasionally, a comment will be trapped in my spam filter. If your comment does not appear in the blog after a few minutes, contact me via the Contact Devo tag at the top of the page.

Some people have been asking how to get a picture – an avatar – beside their comment. This takes a few seconds, but is not that difficult.

  • Go to http://wordpress.com
  • Click on the green sign up now tag
  • Fill out the details in the page(s) that come up. Make sure that you click on the just a user name please button at the bottom of the first info page

You should be able to upload a picture to use as an avatar, and you will be recognised on any wordpress blogs.

If you do not have an avatar, one will be automatically generated using your email address so that each time you come on you will get the same automatic avatar. Remember this if you wish to comment as another “personality”. If you don’t change the email address, everyone will know who you are!
