Rules reviewed

Posted by devo on January 21, 2010

For the first time in the history of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), three commissions – Coaching, Refereeing and Rules – held a joint meeting at the FIVB headquarters on Tuesday.

Items discussed included team composition (12 or 14 players), review of the trial of Libero rule modifications, review of the latest rule changes (net touch, centre line penetration) and the trial of the Golden Formula during the FIVB Men’s World Club World Championships in Qatar.

The joint commission meeting findings will be proposed to the Executive Committee in April. more@fivb

Twenty Twenty Volleyball

Posted by Mt Lofty Volleyball Club on January 21, 2010

Just heard that basketball has launched their version of 20 – 20 cricket with 8 privately owned teams. Sounded very try hard to me.

What about 20 – 20 volleyball? Do we need to counter this fast food approach to sport. What about one set to 20 points. We could have 20 minutes warm up then 20 minutes of play. 5 bonus points for winning the toss. Net cords on service 5 bonus points. Wardrobe malfunctions worth 5 bonus points and all match points must be hit by a left hander. I am sure if we work hard we could look as ridiculous as basketball. They are proposing a 4 point basket. Goodness me.

AIS Junior European Tour, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia (sic)

Posted by devo on January 14, 2010

Okay. It’s the holidays. I’ve been avoiding the internet – loving the rest. I’m sure it’s the same for those at Volleyball Australia. But is that an excuse for this lack of  information? How do we support / follow our team if we don’t get the information? Not good enough Volleyball Australia!

I was expecting the AIS squad to be in Europe now (see the “calendar” on the AVF site) – but apparently they have been in Japan as well!

  • 06/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         2:3 (23-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23, 12-15)
  • 07/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         0:3 (11-25, 22-25, 21-25)
  • 08/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         0:3 (23-25, 21-25, 15-25)
  • 09/01/10            AIS v Asahi Univ.          2:3 (23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 12-15)
  • 10/01/10            AIS v Asahi Univ.          2:3 (25-15, 23-25, 31-29, 21-25, 16-18)

The Australian Institute of Sport Men’s Volleyball Team is presently in Varese, Italy preparing for the second leg of its annual development tour in the coming days with matches against the junior teams of ‘Serie A’ clubs, Verona and Monza, and provincial club side, Tenate.

On Monday, 4 January the team departed Australia following a brief training camp after Christmas before embarking on the three week tour to Japan, Italy and Sweden. Apparenly it wasn’t thought important to update us mere mortals that the details of the trip had “changed”. Or perhaps they thought we wouldn’t know the difference between Japan and Slovakia?  more@Volleyball Australia

Karpol: Lunatics – That’s What I Need

Posted by devo on January 13, 2010

We get a lot of “spam” and requests to present info here at devo’s. Most of it is rubbish. Most of it gets caught by our “spam filter”. But occasionally something comes through that is a little more interesting.

I have only seen Karpol in action on video, but he is certainly one of the “personalities” of the sport. Has anyone had the chance to read this bio? Should I be adding this book to my post Christmas reading list?

I am free to inform you about launching a book on famous Russian coach, two times Olympic champion and three times silver medalist, World champion and three times bronze medalist, two times FIVB Coach of the Year, Hall of Fame member… Nikolai Karpol.

The book is titled “Karpol: Lunatics – That’s What I Need” and it is available at amazon.com. You can see the content of the book at  facebook.com

Igor steps up in tie-break for first victory of Jastrzebie

Posted by devo on January 8, 2010

Time had finally come for the JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel S.A. to notch their first CEV Champions League victory as they scored an amazing five setter against the still undefeated armada of VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN. ~ Ben Hardy & Igor YudinKS Jastrzebski Wegiel SATranslationBen’s web site

Surprise in Jastrzebie Zdroj! After three consecutive losses the Poles scored tonight their first victory after a dramatic match against VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN. “Comparing our first matches in the Champions League I can say that we started playing much better. Good service and solid reception were on our side. Of course, we made some mistakes, but in the crucial moments we were able to finish the decisive attacks, especially with Igor Yudin in the tie-break. Now we are back in contention for the Playoffs“, says Russian star Pavel Abramov. more@Volleycountry ~ Champions league results and ranking ~ CEV

team of the year

Posted by markleb on January 8, 2010

The French sports newspaper has just named in volleyball ‘Team of the Year’.  The team is based on performances in both club and international volleyball for the last twelve months.  The journalists involved seem to have rated most highly the performances Trento in winning the European Champions League, Piacenza in winning the Italian Championships and Poland in winning the European Championships.

The team is:

Setter – Nikola Grbic (Serbia, Trento, Cuneo)

Opposite – Leandro Vissotto (Brazil, Trento)

Receivers – Matey Kaziyski (Bulgaria, Trento), Bartosz Kurek (Poland, Belchatow)

Middle Blockers – Daniel Plinski (Poland, Belchatow), Novica Bjelica (Serbia, Piacenza)

Libero – Sergio (Brazil, Piacenza)

Coach – Radostin Stoytchev (Bulgaria, Trento)

Honourable Mentions where given to –

Setter – Bruno (Brazil)

Opposite – Ivan Miljkovic (Serbia, Olympiakos)

Receivers – Leonell Marshall (Cuba, Piacenza), Stephane Antiga (France, Belchatow)

Middle Blocker – Lukas Saatkamp (Brazil)

Libero – Hubert Henno (France, Pineto, Cuneo)

If I were so inclined I might personally add Marco Meoni and Lloy Ball (who won championships in Italy and Russia respectively) to the setters list, Clay Stanley (who won with Ball in Kazan) to the opposites list, Hristo Zlatanov (who had a monster season in Italy) to the receivers list.  They might not have been so active with national teams during the last international season but are all great players near the peak of their games.

I couldn’t find the original article to link to, but click here to see where I read it.
