A new libero system to be tested at the World Grand Champions Cup

Posted by devo on September 11, 2009

The FIVB will test a new libero system during the World Grand Champions Cup to be held in November in Japan. Each team will have the option of having two liberos with no limits of substitutions among them, to allow coaches to have an alternate for each position.

The decision came after a meeting on the weekend … “It was a very useful meeting,” said André Meyer, “because the rule that is currently in place is not the best solution for Volleyball, but there was not enough time to correct the wording of it before it was released.” more@fivb

Beach Volleyball World Cup begins

Posted by devo on September 11, 2009

The application period for the first-ever FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup got under way this week when the FIVB sent documents outlining the new event to all its Confederations and National Federations … The inaugural World Cup will take place over three years, from 2010-2012, and will act as an additional route through which National Federations will be able to qualify Beach Volleyball teams for the Olympics.

The World Cup … will be a complementary competition to the current SWATCH FIVB World Tour and SWATCH FIVB World Championships, with the number of countries involved expected to jump from around 60 at present to over 150. more@fivb

book review

Posted by markleb on February 24, 2009

I was on Amazon the other day browsing for basketball books (long story) when I somehow ran across a biography/autobiography of American setter Lloy Ball.  As a supporter of volleyball, I felt obligated to buy it in the hope that if people buy books on volleyball it might encourage more people to write them.  I didn’t necessarily have high hopes for the book itself but I figured at least I would read it, as opposed to the Samuele Papi biography in Italian that I bought for the same reason.

The one good thing about not being able to read the Papi biography is that is wasn’t able to disappoint me.  Lloy on the other hand…  It’s not the stories themselves but the fact that the ghost writer didn’t so much ‘write’, as ‘transcribe’.  So while it may have been entertaining to listen to Lloy over a beer or two, when the same expressions are rendered in black and white over and over and over again… less so.

But I’ve read worse books and those books weren’t about volleyball.  If for some reason it’s not at Angus & Robertson’s you could try here.

On the negative side, the photos in the Papi book are MUCH better.

Expert volleyballer

Dave over at Volleyball Base asks why older experienced teams are so successful?

Check out some of the stats from last years World Cup ~ The Older…The Better? A lot of the teams that had success were fairly old. Although older players may not be at their physical peak, volleyball has a high skill demand, which takes many years to develop, meaning maybe old players are quite valuable? more@VolleyballBase

Fiji one player short

Posted by devo on July 23, 2008

The Fijian volleyball team travelling to Australia to play in this weekend’s AVL finals will be leaving one of its team members behind in Fiji. FijiVillage.com reports:

A top women’s Fiji volleyball player was denied a visa this morning to travel to Australia for the buildup matches to next year’s World Cup qualifiers.

Ana Vuniwaqa, who was part of Fiji’s silver medal team in last year’s Pacific Games in Samoa, will miss the trip because of her links to a high ranking officer in the Fiji Military Force. Fiji volleyball team coach Varanisese Maraiwai said now they will only be taking 14 players on the 10 day tour.

The Fiji Women’s Volleyball team has for the first time ever got an opportunity to compete in the World Cup qualification tournament, which will be in Japan next year. The 14-member squad will depart tomorrow morning (Thursday) for Australia. more@FijiVillage

Men’s World Cup – Saturday – match 10

world cup 07 logoUPDATE 3: original posted 1/12/07 @ 08:00

Australia fought hard in a battle of attrition with Puerto Rico at the World Cup on Saturday and bulldozed their way to a 25-21, 15-25, 25-18, 25-21 victory. complete fivb report

I’m proud the way the team responded today. We’ve had a run of losses against some good teams and to improve against another good team was very important for our team and its development. We have one more match to play and it’s important we finish on a good note and continue to improve at the end of the tournament. full press conference and picture

Borgeaud on top team

Posted by devo on December 1, 2007

Russ_BorgeaudWhen asked what makes the difference between the best and the rest at the World Cup, Aussie coach Russ Borgeaud said:

I think in Volleyball it is always consistency in every area, and as well … you need two or three exceptional players, like the best players in the world … On top of that you need the teamwork … if you want to be with the very best teams.
