Poll – what do we expect?

Posted by devo on January 28, 2010

I spoke to Volleyball Australia CEO Joan Perry at AVSC 2+ years ago about the internet and related subjects. At that time she told me that there was a problem with some staff who were not “internet literate”. And that this was a problem that would have to be corrected. They would have to learn.

The women’s program and junior programs – due mainly to Teresa Henderson and some dedicated coaches and parents – have established blogs to keep us up-to-date with their programs when competition is happenning. This has been fantastic for the fans of Aussie volleyball. We can follow what’s happenning; be involved. Even see video of matches!

The men’s /AIS program, unfortunately, has not been so forthcoming. There was a time when coaches would SMS results and MVP’s to me so that I could put them up. That nolonger happens. There are at least 2 “officials” on this tour who are very computer savvy. They have not been in areas where the internet or phone is difficult to access as is sometimes the problem. Parents seem to be getting some information. It is busy on tour, but a quick mail to Volleyball Aus on the bus going home should see results up by the following morning. Why isn’t this happenning?

It appears that CEO Joan is either unwilling, or unable, to insist that part of the duties of a touring Aussie squad is to keep us fans informed. To publicise our sport. Joan, give them a smart phone and show them how to use it!

Jump on the poll in the left hand column and let Joan know what you see as a minimum response on the Volleyball Australia web site at the end of an Aussie match. See also this post.

AIS OS

Posted by devo on January 24, 2010

You wouldn’t know it if you were looking at the Volleyball Australia site, but the AIS boys have been touring overseas. We reported a belated release that let us know that they had gone, and that gave the  match results from the Japanese leg of the tour.

The guys have been in Italy: no results on the Volleyball Australia site. Maybe some parents can fill us in with results?

The third leg of the tour took the guys to Sweden. Thankfully, the Swedish national site thinks that we might want to know the results.

AIS Junior European Tour, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia (sic)

Posted by devo on January 14, 2010

Okay. It’s the holidays. I’ve been avoiding the internet – loving the rest. I’m sure it’s the same for those at Volleyball Australia. But is that an excuse for this lack of  information? How do we support / follow our team if we don’t get the information? Not good enough Volleyball Australia!

I was expecting the AIS squad to be in Europe now (see the “calendar” on the AVF site) – but apparently they have been in Japan as well!

  • 06/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         2:3 (23-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23, 12-15)

  • 08/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         0:3 (23-25, 21-25, 15-25)
  • 09/01/10            AIS v Asahi Univ.          2:3 (23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 12-15)

The Australian Institute of Sport Men’s Volleyball Team is presently in Varese, Italy preparing for the second leg of its annual development tour in the coming days with matches against the junior teams of ‘Serie A’ clubs, Verona and Monza, and provincial club side, Tenate.

On Monday, 4 January the team departed Australia following a brief training camp after Christmas before embarking on the three week tour to Japan, Italy and Sweden. Apparenly it wasn’t thought important to update us mere mortals that the details of the trip had “changed”. Or perhaps they thought we wouldn’t know the difference between Japan and Slovakia?  more@Volleyball Australia

National talent identification

Posted by devo on December 18, 2009

AUSTRALIA’S best 130 junior volleyball players are training in Bendigo this week for the Australian Institute of Sport’s junior development camp … with the aim of earning a place in the Australian junior squad …

National Talent Identification and Development Coach and Junior Women’s Program Manager, Simon Naismith, said the athletes at this week’s camp had been selected based on their performances throughout the year. “We’ve got talent identification scouts out throughout Australia through Volleyball Australia whose prime job is to go out to state schools and competitions and under-16 championships to find athletes to bring to this camp,’’ he said. … “They will have fantastic ball control, which is really important, as well as playing an international style of game,’’ he said. “… we need true athletes out there.’’ more@BendigoAdvertiser

Georgia Sverns, from Upwey High School, has been awarded the 2010 Volleycamp National Scholarship at the closing ceremony of this year’s Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup. Georgia was selected by the AVF’s Women’s Technical Committee.

AVSC underway

Eldo receives 25 years award

The Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup got underway yesterday with the opening ceremony at MSAC. Competition began today. Draw /results (updated)

At the opening ceremony, Volleyball Australia’s Chris Schacht made some interesting comments on the Crawford report, insisting that although volleyball was an Olympic sport, it was also a participation sport. And that the stadium full of athletes at the opening ceremony was proof of this. He promised to send a photo of the ceremony to Crawford and to the minister of sport!

A special mention too for devo’s volleyball regular David “Eldo” Eldridge, as the Heathfield coach became the first person to achieve a 25 years of participation award. Well done Eldo!

Men’s AVL Finals Live This Weekend

Posted by Robbo on December 5, 2009

Three games from the Final Round of the Men’s Australian Volleyball League Season will be streamed live on the OZ Volleyball Channel from the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre this weekend. The final 4 teams are QAS Pirates, AIS, UTSSU and Volleyball WA.

Update: Due to large costs at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, the games might not be streamed Live on air. We will still be recording and commentating the games but might have to stream them onto the website at a later time (then they will be available to watch at anytime). DVD’s of the games should also be available in the coming weeks. We apologise for the change at the last minute.

Update #2: Thanks to the AVF getting on board and supporting us, we are now able to stream the 3 games Live.

The schedule is:

  • Preliminary Final – Saturday 5th December @ 6pm – Loser of Pirates vs AIS play winner of UTSSU vs WA
  • Bronze Medal Final – Sunday 6th December @ 12noon – Loser of UTSSU vs WA play loser of Prelim Final
  • Gold Medal Final – Sunday 6th December @ 2pm (maybe delayed depending on previous game) – Winner of Pirates vs AIS play winner of Prelim Final

The coverage will start 20 minutes prior to each match and will be run by a number of commentators, and will also feature some interviews of ex-national players, people involved with the current AVL season and also spectators.

If you like what you’ve seen on the channel or would like to see more games in the future, please show your support by donating. The more support that OZ Volleyball can get, the more games that can be streamed and the better equipment we can use. Donations can be made by clicking the donate button, which will take you to the Paypal site.
