Chris Hames coaching

Posted by devo on January 30, 2010

Joining new coach Garland on the volleyball staff at Knoxville Catholic High School will be Chris Hames, who played on Australia’s women’s national team (1994-95) and is director of the K2 volleyball training facility in Knoxville.

“I hired these two because they’re very good coaches and good trainers,” Jones said. “They know their volleyball. I think they’re going to teach the old dog new tricks. They’re intense and they work hard. I would think this gives us one of the best volleyball staffs anywhere.” more@PrepXtra

AVSC underway

Posted by devo on December 7, 2009

Eldo receives 25 years award

The Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup got underway yesterday with the opening ceremony at MSAC. Competition began today. Draw /results (updated)

At the opening ceremony, Volleyball Australia’s Chris Schacht made some interesting comments on the Crawford report, insisting that although volleyball was an Olympic sport, it was also a participation sport. And that the stadium full of athletes at the opening ceremony was proof of this. He promised to send a photo of the ceremony to Crawford and to the minister of sport!

A special mention too for devo’s volleyball regular David “Eldo” Eldridge, as the Heathfield coach became the first person to achieve a 25 years of participation award. Well done Eldo!

AVSC Volunteers

Posted by devo on October 21, 2009

The 2009 Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup is just 6 weeks away, and Volleyball Australia would love to have you volunteer at this years’ event. The kids love the whole AVSC trip, and the teachers love bringing them (most of the time I’m sure!) – without volunteers Volleyball Australia wouldn’t be able to hold it, they wouldn’t be able to attend such an awesome event, and the event wouldn’t be the biggest school sports tournament in the southern hemisphere.

If you would like to come to Melbourne for a fun week, please head to www.avf.org.au/avsc and you will find a link to the form – so just fill it out and hit ‘Submit by Email’. If you have any friends or family that would like to volunteer for 2009, please let them know about the link. As you know, we need at least 40 volunteers, so ask around!

Bronwyn Evans has again offered up her services as the Volunteer Coordinator, so you know you will be well looked after!

Any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact  Nikita Hellmuth – Competitions & Events Intern – Australian Volleyball Federation – Email: avsc@avf.org.au

How much does AVSC Cost?

Posted by Hugh Nguyen on October 15, 2009

It’s now 54 days to my favourite week of the year: The Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup! Our own volleyball jamboree! Many of you out there are either participating as players or coaches, or have done so in the past 26 years.

With teams coming from Perth to Paralowie, the question I’d like answered is: How much is each school  paying for its trip per player? Let us know who you’re going with and how much you’re paying.

And what is included in your trip fees? Some schools use public transport, while others have their own shuttle bus service going to both venues. Some stay in backpacker hostels, while others stay in vacated boarding colleges. Some have meals supplied, some have to buy their own. Some teams do a lot of fund raising activities; some teams do none.

So far we have:

  • Rossmoyne (WA) – $1,350
  • Brighton (SA) – $900
  • Gladstone (QLD) – $900
  • St. Mary’s College (SA) – $800
  • Hallett Cove (SA) – $800
  • Heathfield (SA) – $790
  • Loxton (SA) – $690
  • Mercedes College (SA) – $600
  • Willunga High School (SA) – $600 (honours – $615)
  • Girton (VIC Country) – $575
  • Wonthaggi (VIC Country) – $270
  • Eltham (VIC Metro) – $260
  • Monbulk (VIC Metro) – $165
  • McKinnon (Vic Metro) – $80
