Beach heads inland

Posted by devo on December 10, 2009

THE Virgin Blue Regional Series is bringing many of Australia’s best players from the beach to the heart of Bendigo.

Among those volleyball stars is Sarah Battaglene, who hails from Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches. Battaglene will team with Victoria’s Lauren Spark in this weekend’s series, which will feature top players, including Olympians and world champions.

“A lot of people are converting from indoor volleyball to beach volleyball,’’ she said. ”This is a great opportunity for people in Victoria to convert to beach and use all of their skills.’’ The 21-year-old has never travelled to central Victoria and said the main difference between competition in a beach town to Bendigo will be the wind factor. more@BendigoAdvertiser ~ more@VicBeach ~ more@HeraldSun

2009/10 Australian Beach Volleyball Series

Posted by devo on November 23, 2009

Volleyball Australia has announced that is … working closely with our member state associations and their beach tour operators to deliver what will now be known as the Australian Beach Series, comprised of five State Open events and culminating in the National Beach Championships.   This has replaced what many would know as the National Beach Tour.  We are still working diligently to attract sponsorship dollars to assist in supporting each of these events as well as the National Championships.

The Australian Beach Series will be a mainstay for future summer beach seasons.  Volleyball Australia continues to make efforts to build a ‘Pro Tour’ featuring a limited entry of Australia’s best beach volleyball players which will be used to highlight and promote the sport to the public through the use of television.   We are not ready to announce this tour for 2010 but we are hopeful for 2011.

Get all the info, dates and links on the Volleyball Australia site.

Rick Mitchell on Crawford

Posted by devo on November 22, 2009

Rick Mitchell represented Australia at the 1976, ’80 and ’84 Olympic Games, and was also the inaugural executive director of the Tasmanian Institute of Sport. In The Age today he says:

… the Crawford Report suggests otherwise. Coming from a panel with a majority of members having football affiliations, it proposes we focus on sports in the Australian psyche, like football and cricket rather than “minority” sports.

What exactly is a minority sport? Volleyball is hardly part of the Australian psyche, yet it is one of the two largest participant sports in the world. Why should Australia not want to be good at it? Why support sports that have immense media deals and financial capability as it is? Because their representatives say so? Let’s get real chaps! In the global sense, rugby league and AFL, for example, are played by a minuscule gene pool? Minority sports? Indeed!

However, the Crawford report raises one pertinent question. Do we judge Olympic success by medals won or should we focus on the percentage of athletes who produce lifetime bests in the Olympic arena? If it’s the former, then sadly, our view is short term. The latter will bring medals, provided we spend our funds on the one thing nobody seems to mention.

… The real issue is the almost complete lack of a professional career path for coaches in most Olympic sports.
