Men’s AVL Finals Live This Weekend

Posted by Robbo on December 5, 2009

Three games from the Final Round of the Men’s Australian Volleyball League Season will be streamed live on the OZ Volleyball Channel from the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre this weekend. The final 4 teams are QAS Pirates, AIS, UTSSU and Volleyball WA.

Update: Due to large costs at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, the games might not be streamed Live on air. We will still be recording and commentating the games but might have to stream them onto the website at a later time (then they will be available to watch at anytime). DVD’s of the games should also be available in the coming weeks. We apologise for the change at the last minute.

Update #2: Thanks to the AVF getting on board and supporting us, we are now able to stream the 3 games Live.

The schedule is:

  • Preliminary Final – Saturday 5th December @ 6pm – Loser of Pirates vs AIS play winner of UTSSU vs WA
  • Bronze Medal Final – Sunday 6th December @ 12noon – Loser of UTSSU vs WA play loser of Prelim Final
  • Gold Medal Final – Sunday 6th December @ 2pm (maybe delayed depending on previous game) – Winner of Pirates vs AIS play winner of Prelim Final

The coverage will start 20 minutes prior to each match and will be run by a number of commentators, and will also feature some interviews of ex-national players, people involved with the current AVL season and also spectators.

If you like what you’ve seen on the channel or would like to see more games in the future, please show your support by donating. The more support that OZ Volleyball can get, the more games that can be streamed and the better equipment we can use. Donations can be made by clicking the donate button, which will take you to the Paypal site.

Heat seeks Fiji recruits

Posted by devo on December 2, 2009

Fiji BC is reporting that … Four top volleyball players in the Fiji national woman’s volleyball team have been assigned to greener pastures next year.

Anaseini Seniloli, Clair Delai, Ruci Delai and Makarita Erasito will be playing for the ACT volleyball team in Australian interstate volleyball competition.

Former Fiji Volleyball official Jerry Cakau says the four were selected after a brilliant performance last week.  The players won the Good Neighbor Volleyball which was held in Australia, defeating Sydney North by 3 – 2.  “After the successfulness of the competition the coach of the Canberra Heat came by to ask me if the girls are available next year and CEO of the ACT came also to ask their names so the girls can return back in Canberra in January 2010.”

What changes do you want to MAVL next season?

Posted by devo on November 18, 2009

The post on MAVL – finals teams has started to develop some interesting ideas on how AVL should develop. And so a new post so that that idea can be pursued, as the post was becoming too long and unwieldy. How should AVL change for next year to make it a better competition for all? And thanks to The Hoff for the idea!

I am also going to add some polls to this post. if you have an idea that you’d like canvassed, contact me via the Contact Devo’s tab at the top of the blog.

MAVL – finals teams – update 2

Posted by devo on November 17, 2009

Ausvolley reports: It has been bought to our attention that the incorrect order of 3rd & 4th finishing place in the Men’s Australian Volleyball League was posted on our website yesterday; this has been corrected: www.avf.org.au/AVL.

This oversight does not change who will be playing in the Major and Minor Semi-Finals and we encourage all those that are in the Melbourne area to come down to Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre to watch the games.

MAVL – finals teams

Posted by devo on November 16, 2009

AVLlogoThe final four places for the Men’s Australian Volleyball League has been revised due to a computer error. Apologies for the inconvenience that this has caused to teams, particularly to those teams effected. We have identified the cause of the issue within the calculation system and this has been rectified. We will be seeking to review the Tournament Regulations to ensure that appropriate strategies are put in place to better enable the calculation of final placings (for example, moving to three decimal places in points and set ratios).

QAS Pirates and AIS have clearly finished first and second, respectively. The remaining two spots have resulted in a three-way tie between Uni Blues, WA Hornets and UTSSU. An error in the computer system had incorrectly calculated the points ratio for each of the teams. The final positions of the Men’s AVL competition at the end of preliminary rounds is as follows:

Team Played Won Lost Pts Pt Won Pt Played Ratio Set Won Total Sets Ratio
QAS Pirates 10 8 2 26 918 1786 0.51 26 40 0.65
AIS 10 7 3 24 869 1646 0.53 26 37 0.70
WA 10 4 6 18 806 1650 0.49 16 36 0.44 now 4th
UTSSU 10 4 6 18 794 1614 0.49 16 36 0.44 now 3rd
Uni Blues 10 4 6 18 855 1735 0.49 16 38 0.42
Heat 10 3 7 16 773 1624 0.48 12 37 0.32

We appreciate people’s passion and commitment to the Men’s AVL competition and we thank you for your understanding and continued support of this competition.

Men’s AVL – Round 2

Posted by devo on October 26, 2009

Round 2 of the Men’s Australian Volleyball League begins in Canberra this coming Friday night with the first of 2 matches beginning at 6pm, when the AIS will take on the Pirates. The draw for this round has been modified to fit in the replay of Pirates vs UTSSU from round 1. The scheduled AIS vs Heat match will now be played at a “date to be confirmed”.

Let’s hope this round is free from controversy, and the focus can be on the volleyball.

With the NOAS Improving Officiating forum being held at the Australian Institute of Sport on Saturday, let’s hope there are enough refs available to do the job, without the load falling again onto just a few.

Our poll for this week is: Will the UTSSU team be able to record its first win this week? See the poll in the left hand column.

The ladder after round 1 – less the replay match is:

TEAM P W L
QAS Pirates 3 3 0
Canberra Heat 3 2 1
University Blues 3 2 1
AIS 3 1 2
Volleyball WA 3 1 2
UTSSU 3 0 3

MAVL – rematch

Posted by devo on October 19, 2009

AVLlogoThe Men’s Australian Volleyball League started out with some controversy last weekend. When the teams came to award the MVP votes, a player from Pirates was not on the list. UTSSU protested. Pirates protested.

Volleyball Australia’s Joan Perry says, “There were several technical irregularities all around; it just seemed that the only fair thing to do was to have a rematch.”

Everyone has had a fair say on the Men’s AVL – round 1 post. It was a difficult round with refs stretched over 3 events. I think we’ll let the teams do the talking in Canberra in 2 weeks time. I’ve closed down discussion on this topic.
