Chris Hames coaching

Posted by devo on January 30, 2010

Joining new coach Garland on the volleyball staff at Knoxville Catholic High School will be Chris Hames, who played on Australia’s women’s national team (1994-95) and is director of the K2 volleyball training facility in Knoxville.

“I hired these two because they’re very good coaches and good trainers,” Jones said. “They know their volleyball. I think they’re going to teach the old dog new tricks. They’re intense and they work hard. I would think this gives us one of the best volleyball staffs anywhere.” more@PrepXtra

Rourke Concludes Career with All-America Status

Posted by devo on December 18, 2009

Senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) added another first for the Oregon State volleyball program earning All-America status, announced Wednesday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Rourke was named to the second team after earning the program’s first AVCA All-Pacific Region nod, announced last week. She joins 13 other student-athletes on the second team, including seven other Pac-10 opponents. more

Aussie coach at Oregan State, Mark Barnard says, “It is hard to describe just how big this award is, to be named an All American is a massive achievement. There are somewhere around 4000 women playing at the Division 1 level and Rachel has been chosen in the top 28 of all players.”

“She is the only player ever from Oregon State to be named an All American; we are talking about 38 years of Oregon State having a program!”

2009/2010 CEV Indesit Champions League

Posted by devo on December 18, 2009

Pool E
The situation seems luxurious, at least at a first glance. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN has already booked two victories and not against easy opponents. With two three-setters against Italian champion CoprAtlantide PIACENZA and Greek vice-champion Panathinaikos ATHENS, the German lead the standings in Pool E after two legs. “We started better than we all might have expected“, says Stelian Moculescu, head coach of the German team. “Until now everything worked really well. But that is no guarantee that it goes on like this”. For the German champions the campaign continues with the second home match against JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel S.A. of Poland. Moculescu is sure: “This match will be the most difficult for us. For a lot of people a victory is obvious. But that is not true”. The Polish around their Russian star, spiker Pavel Abramov, come to Germany having finished in second place last year’s GM Capital Challenge Cup and in third place in the 2009 Polish league. Currently the club from southern Poland ranges in second position, just behind PGE Skra BELCHATOW. “JASTRZEBSKI WEGIEL does not have many big names in the team“, says Moculescu. “But this is not that relevant”. The German coach warns for the powerful services and attacks of Australians Igor Yudin and Benjamin Hardy. “Their balls are really tough”. For JASTRZEBSKI a success in Friedrichshafen would be the first victory in the CEV Indesit Champions League. If FRIEDRICHSHAFEN wins, the German top team could come quite near to qualify for the Playoffs 12. “We know that we aren’t any longer an underdog“, so Moculescu. “But we know also that we can tumble very quickly.“ more@CEV

            Ben on Worlds

Posted by devo on November 15, 2009

Aussie Ben Hardy has previewed the 2010 World Championships on his blog:

AUS will be playing Russia, Puerto Rico and Camaroon in the first round. What can we expect? Well, the World Championships are a long way away … and a lot of things can change between now and then. Our Australian team can do a lot of growing in this time with some of our players having a lot of responsibility in their club teams. … Shane Alexander … Paul Carroll, Nathan Roberts (and) Igor Yudin … the experience these guys in particular (plus the other guys based overseas) will gain this year will in turn be great for the Australian team.

Our first game in the World Champs is to be Puerto Rico. Yes we have had success the last time we played in the World Cup against them however they are a very dangerous and good team. Also the core of this team has been together for a number of years now making them a tight unit. They will be good and this will be our most important game.

Our 2nd match will be againt Russia. This will be a tough game; even if we have had some good games against them in the past, winning will be unexpected and a huge event in itself.

Third we have Camaroon who I know very little about. … We will, however, have a lot of time to get some data on them …

… it’s a good draw for us. In the past we have not had the best draw, but it seems we have a good chance to get out of the first round and make history.
