Men’s AVL (or blink and you might miss it)

Posted by edbinnie on September 12, 2009

Men’s AVL is just around the corner.

A provisional draw has been released, for what is now a 6 team, 3 round competition. Men’s AVL Draw

  • Round 1 – Brisbane – 16 Oct – 18 Oct
  • Round 2 – Canberra – 30 Oct – 1 Nov
  • Round 3 – Perth – 13 Nov – 15 Nov
  • Finals – Melbourne – 5 Dec – 6 Dec

  • AIS
  • UTS Sydney Uni
  • Queensland Pirates
  • Melbourne Monash Uni Blues
  • Western Australia
  • Canberra Heat

Unfortunately no team from South Australia (hence the cancelation of the South Australian hosting round)

Format is double round robin, with 3 or 4 games in a weekend.

No details on team lists, although I’m sure the teams are already selected – can anyone fill us in on your home state?

Teams trying to lose World Champ Qualifiers??

Posted by edbinnie on May 29, 2009

Just saw this on the FIVB site.
While I can understand that Korea and Japan are both dominant teams, I wouldn’t have thought they were any tougher than China or Australia, especially when comparing competitions from 2007 and 2008 (Asian Champs, Olympic Qualifying, World Rankings).

Am I missing something? Given the volume of volleyball knowledge out there, thought someone might be able to shed light on this for me!

FIVB World Beach Tour 2009 – where’s Adelaide?

Posted by edbinnie on November 6, 2008

The Provisional calendar for the 2009 World Tour has been set and released on the FIVB site.

To my surprise, there was no mention of Adelaide! There is hope in the article – “The calendar is subject to change by the FIVB, with decisions pending on a few double-gender events that need to confirm date and/or location.”

Maybe Adelaide is one of these?

For those that were involved – playing, refereeing, working, or just watching – the 2008 event was fantastic. I know a huge amount of work went in behind the scenes, and it would be a shame if this all fell apart after 1 year.

So does anyone have an inkling as to what is going on?

Rumours abound last year’s event of heavy fines, poor ticket sales, needless to say the level of work required. Having run it once, I’d have thought that Year 2 should be significantly easier, and achieve better spectator volumes.

At the time, I thought it an “interesting” time to take on the new project, with a new WAVL, no MAVL, a new VTAW programme, large staff changes, and a new National Beach Tour Promoter and Sponsor. 2009 also offers its share of challenges, especially with still no definite details for the National Beach Tour –

The Provisional National Tour Dates have a final event listed in Adelaide, hopefully gearing up to the World Tour, so let’s hope that the only reason for not mentioning it in the FIVB release is a date confirmation being required!!!

Australian Uni Games Results

Posted by edbinnie on October 1, 2008

It’s Australian Uni Games time again, this time in Melbourne (Hosted by Monash Uni)

Matches being played at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. There are plenty of good quality matches on show, with many AVL players taking court. Murray Mansfield is at the helm as Tournament Director.

You can check out all the results, draw and tables at

Men’s Div 1

Defending Champs QUT sit on top of the table and haven’t dropped a set, will face up on Wednesday against an undefeated Melbourne Uni. Thursday will see UNSW take on Sydney Uni, which always produces some interesting results. Griffith Uni and Charles Darwin Uni will have a tough run in to try and make the semi’s, so expect to see QUT, Melbourne, Sydney Uni and UNSW battle it out for the Medals. The semi between 2nd and 3rd should be a tight fight!

Semis and Medal games are Friday

Melbourne and Monash Uni have only dropped a set between them, and fight for top spot of Pool B on Wednesday. Sydney Uni and AU (not sure if this is Adelaide Uni, ANU or ACU) duke it out for 3rd and 4th in Pool B.

Pool A looks to be settled with QUT on top (playing winless Charles Sturt Wednesday), but the minor placings can see a bit of movement. Expect to see UQ finish in 2nd, and Edith Cowan and UNSW battle for 3rd and 4th.

Expect to see Queensland vs Victoria in the Semis, although Sydney Uni may just have a little something up their sleeve (I’m hoping anyway!!!)

Quarters and Semis Thursday, Medal games Friday.

There’s also Men’s Division 2 and beach volleyball – Men’s and Women’s pairs, and mixed 4s down at South Melbourne Beach.
