AIS Junior European Tour, Italy, Sweden, Slovakia (sic)

Posted by devo on January 14, 2010

Okay. It’s the holidays. I’ve been avoiding the internet – loving the rest. I’m sure it’s the same for those at Volleyball Australia. But is that an excuse for this lack of  information? How do we support / follow our team if we don’t get the information? Not good enough Volleyball Australia!

I was expecting the AIS squad to be in Europe now (see the “calendar” on the AVF site) – but apparently they have been in Japan as well!

  • 06/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         2:3 (23-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23, 12-15)
  • 07/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         0:3 (11-25, 22-25, 21-25)
  • 08/01/10            AIS v JPN Jr. Men         0:3 (23-25, 21-25, 15-25)
  • 09/01/10            AIS v Asahi Univ.          2:3 (23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 12-15)
  • 10/01/10            AIS v Asahi Univ.          2:3 (25-15, 23-25, 31-29, 21-25, 16-18)

The Australian Institute of Sport Men’s Volleyball Team is presently in Varese, Italy preparing for the second leg of its annual development tour in the coming days with matches against the junior teams of ‘Serie A’ clubs, Verona and Monza, and provincial club side, Tenate.

On Monday, 4 January the team departed Australia following a brief training camp after Christmas before embarking on the three week tour to Japan, Italy and Sweden. Apparenly it wasn’t thought important to update us mere mortals that the details of the trip had “changed”. Or perhaps they thought we wouldn’t know the difference between Japan and Slovakia?  more@Volleyball Australia

Karpol: Lunatics – That’s What I Need

Posted by devo on January 13, 2010

We get a lot of “spam” and requests to present info here at devo’s. Most of it is rubbish. Most of it gets caught by our “spam filter”. But occasionally something comes through that is a little more interesting.

I have only seen Karpol in action on video, but he is certainly one of the “personalities” of the sport. Has anyone had the chance to read this bio? Should I be adding this book to my post Christmas reading list?

I am free to inform you about launching a book on famous Russian coach, two times Olympic champion and three times silver medalist, World champion and three times bronze medalist, two times FIVB Coach of the Year, Hall of Fame member… Nikolai Karpol.

The book is titled “Karpol: Lunatics – That’s What I Need” and it is available at amazon.com. You can see the content of the book at  facebook.com

Slamball or volleyball?

Posted by devo on December 22, 2009

One of the sites that I check out occasionally is Loris Bertolacci‘s Sport, Health & Fitness blog. Loris always talks passionately about his topic. Somehow I missed this post; it’s worth a read.

Come on you guys. Wrest the initiative from the AFL and get kids to play Volleyball in Western Sydney. Paul Roos would be rapt! Before someone gives Lote another million to play Rugby League and Demetriou starts brainwashing newly born babies in Western Sydney get in there! I hear that every new baby born in Western Sydney will be given a Sherrin.

The men’s Volleyball team won the Asian Championship last year and is a great team. There are some awesome and spectacular athletes playing.

Someone has to realize that the one constant in life is change and there are some sports that simply are global and some that are not. Take the punt.

Get rid of slamball and put Volleyball on the screen and sponsor it. Go on. Do it! read the full post

Volleycamp Announces January Camp

Posted by devo on December 21, 2009

Looking for something different for Christmas? Why not suggest to mum or dad that they enrol you in the next Victorian Volleycamp?

The first camp for 2010 will be held on January 23, 24 & 25 at St Bernard’s College in Essendon.

Volleycamp is an ideal preparation for state team trials and the new volleyball year. The camp is NON-residential, so interstate and regional athletes need to organise to stay with a friend. The very successful MASTERCLASS will again be offered for elite athletes who have already achieved a degree of success. The 2010 Volleycamp enrolment brochure is now available from the Volleycamp website – www.volleycamp.com.au.
