In-form Australia devastated unfancied Uzbekistan in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-14) to next compete in the 9th-10th play-off in the 15th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship on Friday.

Australia, eighth placed in the previous championships, attacked well in the first set. Powerful Rachelle Brammer punctured the Uzbekistan’s defence with her fierce spikes to put Australia in front 13-9. Odina Nazarova carried out terrific jump serves to help Uzbekistan narrow the gap 13-20. However, Australia covered the court much better. As Tara West and Fleur Holmes combined well to block Uzbekistan’s spikes, Australia won the set 25-18.

Australia still gained the upper hand in the second set to lead 18-15 before Uzbekistan’s head coach Leonid Ayrapetyants was not pleased with Indonesian referee Made Sudaisa’s decision and asked his players to walk out of the court. Control Committee member on duty discussed the matter with him. The on-going competition then resumed. From then on, Leonid seemingly paid no attention to the game. He sat on the bench and had his mouth shut. Australia stretched the lead to 22-18 before winning the set 25-19, again without much effort.

The third set became a one-sided affair when the Uzbekistan’s game was error-prone, leaving the rivals to storm on. Australia clinched the comfortable set 25-14. With the win, Australia advanced to play in the 9th-10th play-off, while Uzbekistan were relegated to compete in the 11th-12th play-off instead. AVC
