Aussies defeat GB in 5

Challenge international: Great Britain 2 Australia 3 (21-25 25-17 25-23 16-25 12-15)
Aus_GB-AdvGreat Britain fully extended Australia in their second challenge international at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield …  It was a much-improved performance from 24 hours previously with Jason Haldane and Mark Plotyczer raising their game and Joel Miller coming in and playing his part with some tough serving.  Great Britain led by two sets to one but, after leading 5-4 in the fourth, they were never in front again as Australia stepped it up, taking the fourth set and then seizing the initiative in the final set.

Igor Yudin stood up to the plate and contributed five of Australia’s first eight points in the final set … GB continued to compete point-for-point but could never get in front in the set. Miller brought GB level at 12-12 but then served into the net on the next point.  It was the advantage Australia needed. Yudin gave them match point and then Thomas Bawden produced the winner.

Australian coach Russell Borgeaud assessed: “We expected a harder match. We felt there was more to come from GB as they did not play their best game yesterday, for whatever reason. They came at us with renewed vigour and a good set of tactics as they changed the way they were playing and worked very hard. It’s good for us as a team when we get exposed as it gives us a chance to work on things. But there is a great bond about our team and we’ve worked hard on that and making sure everyone contributes to the team.” more @ British Volleyball

The second game was a much closer game than the first. Britain changed some of their tactics and got Jason Haldane much more involved. His experience even more than his ability really helped Britain do so well. For Australia the big guns didn’t do quite as well, but Tom Bawden came on a did a great job. Passier and Zingel also won their individual battles. The team have certainly got some more work to do, but the close game (and winning it) will certainly have been important for their preparation.
