International Standing Volleyball Federation Established

Posted by devo on October 24, 2008

The Standing Volleyball nations of Germany, Slovakia and Cambodia – ranked #1, 2, and 3 in the world respectively – have jointly led the way in the formation of the world’s newest international disability sports federation: The International Standing Volleyball Federation (ISVF)

The ISVF is to be established in direct response to the long – term and ongoing lack of support for Standing Volleyball and its development within the World Organisation of Volleyball for the Disabled (WOVD). The WOVD’s policy of focusing solely on the development of Sitting Volleyball has led the three leading Standing Volleyball nations to formally withdraw from the WOVD, effective as at 31 October 2008.

This new, dynamic federation will oversee the sustainable governance and development of the sport of Standing Volleyball with a view to being registered under the auspices of the FIVB and the IPC. The re-instatement of Standing Volleyball back into the Paralympic Games will be a key objective of the ISVF.

Germany, Slovakia, Cambodia, Poland, India and Kazakhstan will participate in the 2008 Slovakia Invitational World Cup from 9th – 15th November 2008 where the ISVF will be formally established with a new Constitution and Executive Committee. The first officially sanctioned ISVF event will be the 2009 ISVF World Cup to be hosted by an as yet undetermined nation.

Despite its current exclusion from the Paralympic Games, Standing Volleyball continues to be a popular, exciting and spectator friendly sport which has gained a reputation for being an ideal means of rehabilitation for amputee athletes, especially those in post-conflict nations plagued by the scourge of landmines. The ISVF intends that campaigning against the most common causes of disability including landmines (in close cooperation with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines) preventable diseases such as polio and traffic accidents, in support of developing nation members, will form a key part of its activities and promotional material off the volleyball court
